Savannah

April 2017

When you think of Savannah, you think of Forrest Gump, traditional southern food, bucolic streets and squares lined with live oak tree covered in Spanish moss, old mansions, civil war sites/memorials and heat. You'd be right on every one of those points, particularly in the historic district. Savannah is exactly as you'd expect. Though I will point out that the tourism brochures don't mention the sand gnats. They are some gnarly little beasts. I was bit roughly 200 times by those critters especially when we spent our evenings down by the Savannah River watching the massive container ships pass by. However, while we covered every inch of the historic district (and walked over 50 miles), we also headed out of town a bit to visit 3 old forts, several lighthouses, a historic plantation and a cemetery. In addition, we took a day trip to Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. The photos from that trip are in a separate album of its own. We also managed to eat our weight in shrimp and grits along with other Southern specialties like pralines because no one can resist such things.

Day 1 - Travel day (no photos) After a 3-hour flight delay, we arrived late and had dinner at a bar near the hotel, wandered around a bit and went to bed.
