I Joined Google Plus

Google+
I had no plans to sign up for Google Plus until I did it on a whim a few days ago. I never used Friendster when it was the big social site. Then when MySpace and its animated GIFs and embedded MIDI files came along, I never signed up. Then Facebook showed up and despite the fact that many of my friends and family are addicted to it, I never signed up for an account and don’t plan to do so. In general I’ve never seen a need to provide a forum where my coworkers can contact my family or my high school friends can contact my former employees, etc. If want to talk to a friend or family member, I can send an e-mail, send a text or call them. That being said, I do use Twitter and pipe my posts back to my own website. This is an important fact because I think I’ll use Google+ much like Twitter or my own site. I plan to make everything public even though Google+ offers some very granular and really easy to use privacy options should I ever want to use them. One of the main reasons I’ve avoided Facebook is their disastrous history of making people believe their posts are private and then violated their trust by somehow accidentally making their posts public. I’m not naive enough to think place blind trust in any company, but unlike Google’s “Do no evil” motto, Facebook seems to go the exact opposite direction!

Up til now, I’ve loved almost every Google product I’ve used in the past, so I do have high hopes for Google+.

Who knows how much I’ll use it, but you can find me on Google+ right here.

Tweet & Google Plus Buttons

I’ve been meaning to add Twitter buttons to my site for a while. Yesterday, I finally did it, but since the popularity of Google+ is increasing every day I thought I should add that as well. I’ll have more to say about Google+ soon. Not to give away any spoilers, but if you want in invite to Google+, let me know.

In the meantime, feel free to click my Tweet & +1 buttons as you read the site!

Google Maps Killed Bambi!

Oh the humanity! Apparently the Google Maps car had a run in with a deer and the car won. In true Google fashion, the entire thing was indexed!

Ask a gas pump for directions

Road SignBack “in the old days” when you were lost you’d stop at a gas station and ask the attendant for directions. Here in New Jersey we still have the luxury of having an attendant come to our car when we pull in, but in the rest of the states where they have self-serve gas, you’d be hard pressed to find an attendant. You swipe your card, pump your gas and go.

Luckily, getting lost isn’t much of a problem now that we have GPS, cell phones and Google Maps. But now things have gone full circle. If you leave home and forget to map your route first, you can pull into a gas station and ask the pump for directions thanks to an internet connection and Google Maps.

Google Christmas Surprise

While looking for something using Google a few minutes ago, I stumbled upon a little Easter… errr… should I call it a Christmas Egg?

Do a search for “Christmas” or anything else that generates Christmas themed ads on the right side and you’ll see a row of Christmas trees along side your results.

Click here to see for yourself.

Google Earth for Mac

Following up on a post from about six months ago (see post here), Googgle has finally released a MAcintosh version of it’s very cool Google Earth software. It requires MacOS X 10.4 Tiger to run, so I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet, but kudos to Google for getting a Mac version out there.

Google Jet

So these two guys form a little company and call it Google. A few years later they buy themselves a personal jet. This might sound normal until you realize that the jet is a Boeing 767!

Check it out in Silicon Beat.

Google Sitemaps Results

I mentioned before that I started using Google Sitemaps to give my site better representation in Google’s search results. I thought I’d give you an update on my experience so far.

First, my site is getting crawled more often. However, I don’t know how often because my webhost apparently is having a problem keeping my site logs working. But based on the reports from Google, the site is getting crawled. I’ve added some new HTML to the site that allow Google to find more of my pages.

However, the results have been kind of odd. Many of my pages have been turned into supplemental reults and now some are going URL only. I’ll keep you posted on whether this problem works itself out as Googlebot crawls my site more!

Google Maps gets new feature

I’ve mentioned Google Maps before, but I thought I’d point out that they just added a “hybrid” feature where you can overlay maps and satellite images. I’ve been saying they should add this. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who thought so because they finally did it.
