Alaska – Day 8

Hubbard Glacier

July 2010

The only other day that we did not get off the ship was Thursday. Early in the morning, we arrived at Hubbard Glacier. Depending upon the weather conditions plus the size and quantity of icebergs in Yakutat & Disenchantment Bays. The weather finally worked in our favor and it was a beautiful morning. We were able to get within a mile of the face of the glacier, which is as close as cruise ships can ever get. The glacier was also very active with lots of big pieces calving off the face. Because there is nothing man-made out there, it is very hard to comprehend the size of the glacier. When I thought we were a few hundred yards from the glacier, it turned out we were 4 miles away. For your reference, the face of the glacier is over 450 feet tall and 8 miles wide. After spending a few hours at Hubbard Glacier, the ship spent the rest of the day and night crossing the Gulf of Alaska to Seward.
