What I listen to – Tech Guy on KFI

The second podcast that I listen to is atually the first podcast I ever downloaded. It’s the show that introduced me to podcasting.

The Tech Guy on KFI airs every Saturday and Sunday on KFI 640AM in Los Angeles. It’s hosted by Leo Laporte, who I’ve mentioned before.

It’s a long one since it’s a whole radio show, but I like to save it for when i don’t have any other podcasts to listen to.

Visit the site at www.leo.am.
The feed is at http://feeds.feedburner.com/kfi

What I listen to – TWiT

You’ll find that many of the podcasts I listen to originate from the old cast of ZDTV/TechTV. The frontrunner in that group is Leo Laporte. He has several podcasts.

This Week in Tech (or TWiT as it’s known) is the most popular. It consists of many members of the old Screensavers cast and crew. Some regulars include Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, John C. Dvorak, Kevin Rose, Yoshi Deherrera, Roger Chang, David Prager and Robert Heron.

They talk about the latest in tech news and have a fun time doing it. his podcast comes out every Sunday at midnight or so.

Visit their site at www.thisweekintech.com.
Their feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/twit.

CFH is back!!!

For those of you who enjoyed watching The Screen Savers and Call for Help on ZDTV/TechTV, I hvae GREAT news! For the past year or 2 Call for Help 2.0 has been on the Canadian version of G4TechTV. (This network is NOT owned by Comcast, the company that bought the American version of TechTV and turned it into G4 while firing most of the staff.)

The new Call for Help show is really a mix of Call for Help and the Screen Savers. It’s hosted by Leo Laporte still, but he also has 2 co-hosts, Amber MacArthur and Andy Walker.

While this show is available in Canada on G4TechTV Canada and in Australia on the HOW TO Channel, it was not available in the United States. That is changing! Beginning on 29 August, Call for Help can be seen on G4 at 1100 EDT weekdays!!!

I’m setting my DVR right now! Downloading the torrents of the show was becoming tiresome.

The “What I listen to” Series

Since there hasn’t been much of anything of interest going on lately, I thought I’d talk about podcasting. For those of you who don’t know, podcasting is simply the delivery of audio files (or video) via an RSS feed. Basically it’s audio that’s delivered to you automatically every time the author creates a new episode.

Over the coming days (or weeks) I’ll list all of the podcasts to which I subscribe. I’ll provide their homepage, the feed URL and some comments. Hopefully you’ll find a podcast you didn’t know about.

Secure your computer the NSA way

The NSA (National Security Agency, the government’s top secret decryption and code breaking agency) has released guidelines on how to secure your computer. They have versions for most major operating systems.

It’s pretty thorough and worth a read if you’re worried about computer security (and you should be!).

Take a look at it on the NSA’s site.

Konfabulator is free

For those of you who haven’t updated to MacOS X 10.4 Tiger yet, or who use Windows, the program that inspired the “Widget” technology in OS X 10.4 is now free. You used to have to pay for this program, but Yahoo! just bought it and now gives it away for free. I downloaded it last night. It’s a cool program, but you can easily cluter your desktop beyond recognition.

Construction

You may have noticed that the homepage is kind of torn apart at the moment. Hopefully you also noticed that the whole site has a slightly new look. The elevator buttons are gone! I liked them and a few people complimented me on them, but they were too big and weren’t easy enough to use to navigate through the site. Hopefully you’ll find the new design easier to use.

The homepage will be done soon. I was going to wait until it was done to upload the new pages, but I think most people look at the other pages more anyway. If you have any suggestions about what conent I should put on my homepage e-mail me and let me know.

Zug.com

If you’re looking for a site to make you laugh out loud, check out Zug. It’s a hilarious site run by a guy named John Hargrave. He’s insane. His pieces are mostly chronicles about his crazy and really random adventures. Whether he’s ordering prescription drugs online or trying to see how far he can push signing bogus names on credit card slips, he’ll have you cracking up. I can’t really do the site justice in this description.

Check it out now at www.zug.com.

Server issues

My site is currently hosted a company called VizaWeb. They provide good service, but they seem to be having some growing pains. Many people, including myself, switched to them because they were recommended by technology guru, Leo Laporte. The onslaught of new customers seems to be causing problems. I’ve experienced some downtime as a result.

What I’m asking of you is that if you see my site is down or unreachable, please e-mail me and let me know. If you don’t know my address you can use my contact form once the site is back up. You can also post it in the comments of this entry.

Thanks!
